Punky Empowered
It is so amazing when something from your childhood reemerges and continues to inspire you.
Back when I was what they called a latchkey kid I used to be SO EXCITED to come home and watch the TV show, Punky Brewster. Her humor, creativity, and spunk were so empowering for a young girl trying to find her place in the world.
Now nearly 30 years later Soleil Moon Frye still continues to inspire by her recent documentary on Hulu with her Heart, Vulnerability, and Courage! It was such a treat and I am so glad she was able to create such a reflection on her journey into womanhood. What I especially loved was how it was like literally stepping into a time capsule from the ’90s!
Of course, I had to watch this, I adored Punky Brewster as a kid but the way it took me back to those times before social media was unexpected. Times where I lived in my fashion magazines! I devoured magazines like Seventeen and YM. I even had the issue of People where she was on the cover to talk about her breast reduction surgery and how she finally felt free.
I thought it was so amazing the way she took a video camera everywhere and recorded so much! Oh, how I wish I had recordings from my teenage years at my friend’s house that we liked to hang out at. That would be such a trip to watch! I commend Soleil Moon Frye to have lived her life in the spotlight and be able to share with the public her cherished memories especially about those that she has lost to such a heartbreaking tragedy.
As a creative and a leader it’s important to feel empowered and to empower others but as a woman, it often comes with a lot more expectations like having grace and understanding along with it. SMF did all of that while still keeping things real and raw and so just like when I was a little youngster wearing tons of bans and bracelets on my wrist to be like her, 😆 I am still in awe of her. 😲
